ICELAND is set to give St Neots town centre a welcome boost when it opens in the coming months.

The frozen food giant has said this week that refit work to turn the town's former Woolworth's store into a supermarket is underway.

A spokesman for the firm said the new store is due to open in June but the date is not set in stone.

The building has been empty since Woollies closed in January after the firm went into administration. Woolworth's in St Ives and Huntingdon was also closed but it is not yet known what will happen to those buildings.

Iceland's move into St Neots is part of the firm's acquisition of 51 former Woollies stores and the creation of more than 2,000 jobs across the UK in the coming year.

The supermarket's move to St Neots will mark its return to the town after it sold its former town centre premise to Marks and Spencer two years ago.

The firm declined to say how many new jobs would be created by the store's opening. However, it is advertising for a supervisor.

A spokesman said: "We can confirm that Iceland is due to open a new store in the former Woolworth's site in June. However, this date is still to be confirmed. All jobs will be advertised on our website in due course."

Town mayor Councillor Bob Eaton said the opening of Iceland in St Neots was excellent news.

He said: "Lots of people have missed having an Iceland store in the town. Despite the current economic climate this news shows that St Neots is a great place to invest and hopefully others will follow.
