THE General Election is just around the corner and to help you decide how to cast your vote, The Hunts Post will be hosting a special election debate.

The event will take place at the Commemoration Hall in Huntingdon on April 22 - two weeks before the country goes to the polls on May 6.

The Conservative, Labour and the Liberal Democrat candidates have all agreed to take part and let you know their views and parties' policies on the issues that matter to Huntingdonshire.

The 2010 candidates taking part in the debate will be Jonathan Djanogly, the Conservative MP looking for a return to Parliament, Martin Land for the Liberal Democrats, and Labour's Anthea Cox.

Five years ago the result saw Mr Djanogly attract more than half of the 52,418 votes cast (26646, 50.8 per cent) with Julian Huppert of the Lib Dems in second (13,799), and Stephen Sartain for Labour in third (9,821).

This year's results will not be known until the day after the election, with the count starting at 9am on Friday, May 7 and the General Election result expected to be announced at 12.30pm. Votes for the 17 district council seats will be counted soon after with results expected around 3.30pm.

A lot has changed in the five years since the last election, including the issues which are affecting people's lives, which is why we want Hunts Post readers to attend the debate and to send in the questions they would like the candidates to answer.

The free event will be ticket only and to be in the audience readers will need to apply either in writing or via e-mail.

Questions for candidates can also be submitted in the same way - details are at the end of the article.

Hunts Post Editor Andy Veale said: "There are a lot of important issues facing Huntingdonshire, including the franchising of Hinchingbrooke Hospital, funding issues for schools and Huntingdonshire Regional College, cuts in public services and public spending, transport issues and a raft of other areas which impact on our lives.

"This will be your chance to hear what the candidates have to say on major issues that affect the Huntingdon constituency and the policies, such as public spending, that will be shaping the future of the country."

Further information on other candidates standing in the election will be published in The Hunts Post in due course.
