NORTHSTOWE is to be a flagship eco-town backed by 1.5million of Government funding.

The planned new town topped the bill in a national list of projects announced on March 9 by housing and planning minister John Healey.

The money will help South Cambridgeshire District Council (SCDC), Cambridgeshire County Council and Cambridgeshire Horizons develop proposals to showcase eco-friendly living at the settlement.

SCDC's Northstowe portfolio holder Cllr Tim Wotherspoon said: "This is our chance to show that we can make Northstowe somewhere really special.

"It will demonstrate that new development and enhancing the environment can go hand in hand."

Owned by the Homes and Communities Agency and Gallaghers, Northstowe is set to provide about 9,500 homes and support 9,000 new jobs.
