HUNTINGDON bed manufacturer Horatio Myer and Company Limited has recreated what was once a popular product – the round bed.

Rayma and Roy Davies, from Rubery in the West Midlands, first bought their round bed in 1974. In addition to having their bedroom furniture manufactured to fit around the bed, the Davieses also took it to Australia and back in 1981 because they did not wish to be without it, even on the other side of the world.

Recently Mrs Davies contacted Horatio Myer to find a new one as the bed was showing signs of wear after 38 years of use.

Tony Abram the company’s new product development co-ordinator started to cast his mind back.

“Having worked for the company for 26 years, I can still remember when we made this type of product,” he explained. “I was able to locate the pattern for the bed, and we have been able to introduce new technology into the mattress with natural wool and cotton, along with over 1,400 of our pocket springs. We also re-upholstered the base.”

“We called the bed The Endeavour after Captain Cook’s ship which he too took to Australia and back,” explained Tony. “We even put the name on the bed banner too to celebrate the unique nature of it?.

The bed was hand-made under the Staples brand and was presented to Mr and Mrs Davies in the Horatio Myer showroom.

“It’s a great to know that we still have great British manufacturing, which I always like to support and I am thrilled to have my bed back,” said Mrs Davies, who is pictured with, from left, Russell Banbury from Myer’s product development team, husband Roy Davies and Tony Abram.
