THE biting recession puts increasing pressure on social housing services as some families lose the income of their principal breadwinners and can no longer afford mortgages or to remain in the private rented sector.

That pressure makes it vitally important that social landlords respond efficiently and effectively, with housing authorities such as Huntingdonshire District Council, to prevent homelessness.

Huntingdon-based Luminus Group is the region's premier housing provider and has been named one of the UK's 100 Best Companies to Work For.

"Luminus is proud to sponsor The Hunts Post Huntingdonshire Employer of the Year Award because we believe that a company's strength lies in the quality and dedication of its employees," the company said.

"Luminus now enjoys a high national public profile, with a growing international reputation, as a modern business, dedicated to excellence, with effective Third Millennium leadership and high quality employees as the keys to its success.

With over 330 staff, Luminus has - on a number of objective measures - one of the most talented and motivated staff teams in the UK and has received public recognition in 2009 by winning several prestigious business awards.

They include 12th place in the Sunday Times Top 100 Companies to Work For, Best Companies 3 stars "An Extraordinary Company", the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents Occupational Health and Safety Gold Award for the fifth year in a row and the British Safety Council International Safety Award.

In 2008, Luminus won the National Business Awards Employer of the Year (Midlands region). The company was also national finalist in the Health, Work and Well-being and Employer of the Year categories.

Luminus says it is widely known for its inspirational leadership and innovation in housing services delivery.

"Luminus leads the way in socially-responsible business in eastern England, focusing on providing homes, employment, real estate services, building sustainable communities and energising hope for life's best - today and for future generations," the company added.

"This commitment to excellence and social responsibility is even more important in these difficult financial times. Strong communities, excellent training and opportunities, support to the most vulnerable people in society and unbeatable customer service have never been so crucial.

"Luminus is proud to work with The Hunts Post to encourage other employers to follow its example."

Chan Abraham, Luminus Group chief executive, explained: "We recognise that people are our greatest asset. It is very important to us to create an environment where staff are envisioned with a sense of purpose in their work and are inspired to achieve great results and excellent outcomes.

"We want them to understand their individual contribution in helping us achieve our corporate goals and provide clear and decisive leadership. We offer excellent working conditions and employment benefits, and invest in the personal and professional development of all of our staff to enable them to rise to their potential.

"Luminus is committed to excellence, effectiveness, efficiency and equality of opportunity as a service provider and employer. We are delighted to be sponsoring the Employer of the Year category again in this year's Hunts Post Business Awards and hope many will apply."

The judges will be looking for employers who share similar values.
