ONE of Huntingdon's more recent historic properties - the former home of the town's 19th century governor - has gone on the market for around £700,000.

Grade II Listed guest house, Braywood House in St Peter's Road, was built in 1828 and was formerly the Governor of Huntingdon's home, as well as being part of the County Gaol and House of Correction. The property still retains much of its original character and has been sympathetically extended over the years, say agents Christies.

The house, opposite Huntingdon Leisure Centre, has a 13-cover breakfast room and a games room, which can accommodate seven. The main house houses 10 of the letting bedrooms, with the remaining two located in a detached lodge, which has a communal kitchen. The owner's accommodation consists of one bedroom, a breakfast room, bathroom and a conservatory/office.

Mark Page, from Christie's Ipswich office, said: "Braywood House has been placed on the market by the current owner, Mrs Lynne Knapp, who has operated the business for over 20 years.

"The guest house is open all year round, with the exception of some bank holiday weekends and caters predominantly for the commercial sector during the week and by leisure and tourists at the weekends.
