ALCONBURY- based Westland Horticulture has scooped two of the garden industry's top "Oscars" at a ceremony in Birmingham. The company won the Garden Industry's Manufacturers' Association (GIMA) Award of Marketing Excellence and Best Point of Sale Marketing Award for an innovative seed potato pallet display.

Designed to cater for the needs of both keen and novice grow-your-own food enthusiasts, Unwins, a brand of Westland Horticulture, has seen seed potato sales rise dramatically at its garden centre sales throughout the UK.

Karl Jempson, director of sales for Cadbury Garden and Leisure, said: "Seed potato sales were up for 2006 and the sales were very good. The public is very interested in growing their own vegetables and they have a greater understanding of the challenges.

"The Unwins point-of-sale encourages novice gardeners to give it a go and the information provided on the packaging makes it very easy.
