MORE than 1,500 people have logged on in just a week to a new Cambridgeshire County Council website designed to tell an independent transport commission what they think about congestion charging in Cambridge and public transport improvements across the county.

Responses on the website will be discussed at public meetings led by the commission, chaired by former local government boss Sir Brian Briscoe, supported by respected transport economist Professor Tony Travers as technical adviser.

In spite of the number of visitors, only 164 of them have so far offered answers to initial questions posed by Sir Brian, the county council revealed yesterday (Tuesday).

The commission was set up following deep divisions among the controlling Conservative group on the council about whether to apply for more than 500million Whitehall cash for transport improvements in exchange for some sort of demand management in the city - possibly congestion charging in the morning peak.

Sir Brian is urging people to log on to www.cambstransportcommission.co.uk and fill in the online survey to help him get a picture of what problems people face daily when they travel around the county. The online survey closes on Friday March 6.

He said yesterday: "I'm really pleased with this early response and I want more people to give us their views about the issues they face when the move around Cambridgeshire. It's good news that people are getting actively involved in this process, and every response will be carefully looked at.

"As well as giving your views, you can see what other people are saying, as all responses are posted on our site. I must stress that, although we are reviewing Cambridgeshire County Council's Transport Innovation Fund proposals, nothing has been ruled in or out at this stage. Your views certainly are key in helping us put together a report to present to the council in the summer.
