Work has started on the construction of a new community primary school at Wyton-on-the-Hill.

The school, which will cost almost £9.3 million, will be able to accommodate up to 315 pupils when it opens next year.

Cambridgeshire County Council was given the go-ahead to demolish the existing school and caretaker’s accommodation last November and replace it with a two-storey school building and single-story pre-school, together with a means of access, parking and landscaping.

The county has just provided Huntingdonshire District Council with details of the materials to be used in construction, which was one of the conditions in its planning application.

A spokesman for the county council said: “The existing school is in poor condition and is difficult and costly to maintain beyond its economic life.

“The construction of the new school within the existing school site will be followed by the demolition of the current school building.”

The spokesman said: “Work on the new school has now started and should be complete by early 2019 with the demolition of the existing school and associated landscaping works to follow in spring 2019.”

The county’s education team, the head teacher and governors of the school worked together to develop the proposals to replace the existing school which has places for 210 pupils.

The new buildings will be able to hold up to 315 pupils to meet increasing demand for pupil places in the area and a new room will also be provided to cater for early years and childcare spaces.

The school’s website says construction of the new building was “well under way” with the playground and adjoining car park having disappeared and the creation of a new staff car park forming the first stage of the new facilities.

It plans to show the evolution of the school site from the rebuilding through to the demolition of the original school.

The school also plans to take drone footage of the scheme to show the progress being made.

Wyton-on-the-Hill is based around RAF Wyton and became one of the county’s newest parishes in 2010 after service accommodation was sold off.
