Members of staff at Huntingdon firm Brown and Co Alexanders took on a 27-mile bike ride to raise funds for the East Anglian Air Ambulance.

The team set out from the Rutland Cycle Centre, in Grafham, on October 14, taking a trip up through Grafham and on to Brampton, transporting 250lbs of fresh produce along the way.

The produce was destined for Jimmy’s soup kitchen, in Cambridge, and had been donated by Cambridgeshire farmers A L Lee Farming Company, Alan Bartletts, G’s Produce and J S Young Farms, ranging from potatoes and parsnips to beetroot and carrots.

The cyclists travelled through Huntingdon and Godmanchester on to the Hemingfords until they came to their first stop in St Ives.

After a much-needed coffee break, the team joined the guided busway where, despite the torrential rain, spirits remained high as they cycled a further 17 miles into the centre of Cambridge.

A spokesman for the High Street firm, said: “At around 1.30pm family members came back into sight outside Jimmy’s soup kitchen. We received a warm welcome and the produce was gratefully received, with the bonus of receiving a free wash. “Barry Griffiths who runs Jimmy’s fundraising efforts explained how they are involved in the community and that the produce would be used with two weeks and they house around 50 people at any one time.”

To date, the team has raise more than £3,000, with donations still coming in.

The spokesman added: “Our special thanks to Rutland Cycling, A L Lee Farming Company, Bartletts, G’s Produce and J S Young Farms for their kind support and donations.”
