TARTS, innuendos and a baking contest are the ingredients that a Brampton student is hoping will provide the recipe for a hit musical.

They form the gist of The Bakewell Bake-Off - a show written by 23-year-old Emily Buck and her friends as part of their masters in musical theatre.

The musical, which tells the story of a baking competition in the Derbyshire town of Bakewell, will be performed by the group at Waterloo East Theatre in London after the students' tutors said the show deserved to be taken to a bigger stage.

The students, who all attend Guildford School of Acting, have also made an impression in Bakewell where the town's mayor has invited them to visit.

Emily, of Crane Street, Brampton, said: "It's a bit of fun, a very lighthearted and very silly show. It's full of puns and innuendos. We actually have a line in it about soggy bottoms - there's something for everyone."

The play was inspired by Britain's obsession with baking following the BBC's hit show The Great British Bake-Off - but the idea of involving the town of Bakewell followed some research into the history of the Bakewell pudding.

The show also involves the chance for the audience to get a taste of the cakes baked by the cast, including those of the Bakewell variety.

Emily said: "Once we came up with the idea we did some research and found that Bakewell had an interesting past.

"There's dispute over the original recipe in the town.

"Everyone thinks it's the Bakewell tart but it's the pudding that was discovered there.

"In the musical each of the three judges disagree on the original recipe."

Emily added that she fell in love with drama while at Hinchingbrooke School, Huntingdon, where she was involved in several productions such as Grease, Fiddler on the Roof and Much Ado About Nothing.

She finishes her masters degree in October and is hoping that The Bakewell Bake-Off will help her to secure her dream career in musical theatre. "I'd like to be in musicals or get the chance to be in something like Downton Abbey," Emily said.
