Fears about violence in the streets, sleepless nights, litter and other anti-social behaviour will form the foundation of opposition to plans to reopen a nightclub in Huntingdon and give the town a much-needed boost to its night-time economy.

The proposals to re-open the night spot in All Saints Passage as the S One Club hinge on the business venture being able to secure a licence at a hearing on Thursday at Huntingdonshire District Council.

The town has been without a dedicated nightclub since April 2012 when, under previous management and the name Level 2, there was a series of violent offences. Cambridgeshire police said the final straw was a mass brawl on April 22, 2012, involving about 30 people.

More than two years later and Steve Woodham, owner of Steve’s Taxis and Steve’s Car Sales, has put forward, as part of the licence application, a list of plans to try to ensure history is not repeated.

CCTV would be installed and monitored while the club was open, at least eight door staff would be on duty on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and taxi marshals would be used at the end of the evening to help with crowd dispersal.

Mr Woodham told The Hunts Post the venue would open as a nightclub two days a week and would open at other times for dance and exercise classes, film showings and other activities for over-50s. He added the move would create about 20 jobs in the town.

However, the people living near to the club, along with some business owners, remember the bad old days of Level 2 and have written to HDC’s licensing sub-committee to object.

INFORMATION: The meeting is at Pathfinder House at 10am.
