A bell-ringing group in Warboys is hosting an open event on Friday in a bid to attract more people to take up the pastime.

The ringers, known as campanologists, hold their weekly practice sessions at the Church of St Mary Magdalene, in Church Road, and welcome beginners to join them from 7pm.

The team, led by tower captain Gerard Bland, is currently made up of about 10 members but they are keen for more people to get involved, with no experience or links to the church necessary.

Warboys resident Lita Carter was new to bell-ringing when she was persuaded to join the group last year but says she has thoroughly enjoyed the challenge of taking part.

“There is so much more to it than just pulling a rope. It’s very rewarding and a there is a great sense of achievement, too.

“I moved to the village about a year ago and wanted to get involved with what was going on so I went along to the practice session and I really enjoyed it.

“It is very good exercise and there is a social aspect to it as well – it’s about belonging somewhere. Everyone in the team has been so welcoming and friendly.”
