A baby girl with serious health problems is doing her bit to raise money and awareness for a good cause close to her family’s heart by wearing odd socks for a week.

Eva Fulton was born at Hinchingbrooke Hospital in Huntingdon in May last year with a cleft palate. She was also diagnosed with Pierre Robin Sequence, which meant she had a receded chin.

Her mum Kylie, 28, who with husband Peter, 31, lives in Cambridge Street, St Neots, recalled the day she was born. “We weren’t too phased because there’s a lot worse,” she said. “I was just glad she was here, safe and happy.

“The day after, the cleft nurse came and she was brilliant. We were given a lot of help and support from the charity CLAPA (Cleft Lip And Palate Association), especially in the early days with feeding as Eva couldn’t suck.”

CLAPA helped with advice and also provided specialist bottles to help with feeding.

Aged just eight-and-a-half months, Eva had surgery at Adden brooke’s Hospital, Cambridge, to repair her cleft palate.

Meanwhile, over time her receded chin, which can lead to breathing difficulties, has come forward.

However, Eva, who has a sister, Peter’s daughter Abby, 11, is one of a number of children with Robin Sequence who also have Sticklers Syndrome and is believed to be partially blind in one eye and extremely short sighted. She also has severe hearing loss.

Close attention is paid to her eyesight because the retina can become detached from the back of her eye, so she has regular checks ups at Addenbrooke’s.

“She’s a very happy, confident baby,” continued Kylie. “Within a couple of weeks of having surgery she was back to causing mischief.”

Eager to help CLAPA after it had helped them, Kylie looked for a fundraiser that Eva could take part in.

“I wanted it to be something she could do, so she was raising the money.”

So for a week from August 18, Eva’s socks will not match – and she’s seeking sponsorship. Through online donations, she has already raised more than £300.
