MEMBERS of a Colts football team are to run around six different football grounds in a day to raise money for a friend who is suffering with a life-limiting condition.

Players for Godmanchester Rovers Under-12s Blues went to school with 11-year-old Tomas Mayers, who has Duchenne muscular dystrophy. So when it came to deciding what cause to raise money for on their latest fundraising venture, the squad needed little time to make up their minds.

They will now run three times, a distance of 1km, around the pitches of their six chosen grounds on Tuesday, February 12, starting with Peterborough United's London Road stadium at 10am.

By far their most exciting visits will be to Arsenal's Emirates Stadium and nearby White Hart Lane, where Tottenham Hotspur play, meaning they will get the chance to run out onto the pitch where greats such as Jack Wilshere, Theo Walcott and Gareth Bale play every week.

They will also visit MK Dons and Stevenage before rounding off their tour at Cambridge United.

The team's target is to raise more than their previous efforts for The Willow Foundation, where a penalty kick event involving the former England and Spurs goalkeeper Ian Walker netted £800.

The cash will be split between funds for the team and Tomas's appeal.

Team manager Colin Burroughes said: “If I was going to the Emirates and White Hart Lane at their age, I'd be ecstatic. A lot of the players are already very excited. If they aren't now, the scale of it will certainly hit them when they walk out onto the pitch. Hopefully it will inspire them.

“The team are all so used to Tom because some of them went to school with him, know him personally and have daily interaction with him online.”

Mr Burroughes appealed for anyone who could help by loaning a minibus for the 14 youngsters and three coaches going on the tour to come forward.

Tomas's genetic condition causes muscle weakness, which not only makes walking difficult but causes complications with bones and joints.

His family, who live at Stukeley Meadows, have set their sights on a powered wheelchair to improve Tomas's independence but need to raise £20,000 to pay for the machine.
