After many suggestions and much speculation by Hunts Post readers about the name of the new Huntingdon link road, we can reveal that it will be called... Edison Bell Way.
The £10million road will be officially opened on April 8, aiming to cut the amount of traffic on the town’s ring road.
Cambridgeshire County Council contractors are putting the finishing touches to the road which will link Ermine Street and George Street, opposite Huntingdon Railway Station.
The road’s name – Edison Bell Way – is a tribute to Edison Bell Limited London & Huntingdon, a firm that made gramophones and records. The last Edison Bell records were issued in January 1935.
The opening of the link road will help to unlock investment in Huntingdon West where the new Sainsbury’s supermarket will be built as well as the possibility of a hotel, pub, care home, drive-through restaurant, and homes proposed by Tesco’s development arm Spen Hill.
One of the favourite names among the suggestions from Hunts Post readers was Silent Channel, named after the factory at the site. Other historic names included links to the Chivers jam factory and Dryden House.
