The family event, which included vintage fire engines and live demonstrations, wet sponge throwing and a ‘dunk the firefighter feature’ saw £2,500 donated to The Firefighters Charity, Magpas Air Ambulance and Smokey Paws, a charity that provides oxygen masks for pets.

Watch commander Rob Robinson said: “This was our first open day for a number of years and we are so pleased to have seen such a fantastic turnout. It was busy throughout the day and we believe a couple of thousand people attended.

“Most of the crew had been out at an incident in the early hours of the morning, but after an intake of coffee and sausage sandwiches we were all ready to go.

“The support has been so generous and as a result we raised money for three great causes. This is very much appreciated.

Spectators were able to watch firefighters using specialist equipment to rescue casualties from road traffic collisions and perform a ladder rescue, as well as a demonstration to show what happens when you pour water on a hot chip pan fire.
