About 50 firefighters tackled a blaze at an industrial estate in Ramsey on Saturday night.

Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service crews were called at about 10.30pm to High Lode Industrial Estate, in Stocking Fen Road, and when crews arrived they found flames coming through the roof of an industrial unit used as a car bodyshop.

Lots of smoke was issuing and residents in the surrounding areas were asked to keep their windows and doors closed while firefighters extinguished the fire, which involved the 20m by 30m industrial unit and "a number of vehicles inside".

Crews wearing breathing apparatus used jets, ground monitors, the MultiStar aerial appliance, hydrants and pumped water from a nearby open water source to extinguish the fire by about 2.30am.

The incident was then scaled down as crews, including a water carrier, command unit and aerial appliance, started to return to their stations. One crew remained at the scene until Sunday morning and continued to make regular inspections.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is being carried out.

Station Commander Jamie Johnson added: "This was a significant fire, which was well established by the time crews arrived, and excellent work by the firefighters prevented the fire from spreading to adjacent buildings."
