Supermarket shoppers will be given a golden opportunity tomorrow (Thursday) as budget chain Aldi opens its new store in Huntingdon.

The discount retailer started work on its new store on the former Spenhill Development site, in Edison Bell Way, earlier this year.

It will be ready to open its doors at 8am with a grand prize giveaway to the first 100 customers.

Store manager, Rob Place, said: “The team and I are really excited to open our new store.

“We’re looking forward to welcoming customers on the morning of the opening, and with some great golden ticket prizes up for grabs, we’re hoping for a good turnout.”

To celebrate the opening, Aldi will be handing out 100 golden envelopes, each containing tickets to win a range of prizes including a 55-inch television, a 40-inch 4K television, caravan television/DVD, a Garmin Edge sat nav, and a range of other prizes including Aldi shopping vouchers.

The mayor of Huntingdon, Councillor Daryl Brown will be in attendance to take part in the ribbon- cutting ceremony.

As part of the opening, the store has been running a Christmas-themed poster competition with local schools. The winning artist will be invited to the store opening to receive £100 for their school and a tablet PC prize. Their design will then be printed on a poster and displayed in-store.

The new store, which has created 30 jobs for people in the local area, will become the fifth supermarket in the town and is set to compete with rival discount chain Lidl, which opened in December, last year, in Stukeley Road.

Following the store opening, Aldi will be donating a range of products to the Wood Green Animal Rescue with animal feed going out in the coming weeks.

The site of the supermarket laid derelict for almost two years after Tesco agents Spenhill had set to build houses on the land but pulled out last year.
