And the Acorn Cancer Support Group, which covers the St Ives, Huntingdon and Ramsey areas, received cheques totalling £1,500 during the celebrations at the Dolphin Hotel in St Ives.

Colin Hyams, vice-chairman, said: “It was amazing, it was really amazing.”

Mr Hyams, who became involved with the group when his late wife Ann was diagnosed with cancer, said: “People don’t know where to go or who to talk to when they or a loved one are diagnosed.

“When my late wife was diagnosed she was told about Acorn by Macmillan and I have been involved ever since.”

Mr Hyams, who has since remarried, said carers often remained supporting the group after they had lost a loved one because it helped them feel they were not alone.

The anniversary was marked with a reception at the hotel during which a cheque for £500 was presented by personnel from RAF Wyton and a further £1,000 from helpers at a coffee session at the Corn Exchange in St Ives.
