NEW Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin says minor works to improve the A14 intersections at Spittals in Huntingdon and Girton near Cambridge will be carried out next spring after design work is completed.

The Spittals work is expected to include additional ‘through lanes’ on the westbound carriageway by the Huntingdon Marriott Hotel and eastbound from the A141 at the busy junction.

The work is part of a 20million package of short-term measures to reduce congestion that was announced by the Government last autumn. It included the additional portable variable message signs that have been installed on the westbound approaches to junctions 24 at Godmanchester and 21 at Brampton Hut and on the southbound A14 spur at Spittals.

But Mr McLoughlin has turned down an offer from Huntingdon MP Jonathan Djanogly to visit the constituency to see the problems caused by the A14 at first hand. “My diary is quite full at the moment,” he pleads.
