A group of bikers who volunteer their services to deliver essential blood packs and medical samples to hospitals across Cambridgeshire organised a delivery of a different kind on Sunday.
Members of SERV Suffolk & Cambridgeshire rode from Caxton Gibbet to Huntingdon to deliver a haul of Christmas gifts for children on the Holly Ward at Hinchingbrooke Hospital.
Paul Firman, SERV member and organiser of the event, said: “I put a call out to other SERV members to take part and a number rallied round and took part in getting presents and delivering them to Holly Ward.
“The group that came together was made up of 10 SERV members, family and friends. We made our way to Holly Ward where we were greeted by nursing staff. We delivered the presents and were lucky enough to meet a mother with her five-month-old who was in for a few days. This reminded us all why we were doing the run.
“We also managed to speak with some of the doctors and nurses on the ward. It was good to bring a smile to their faces as well as they are the true heroes. I want to thank the hospital staff, SERV members, family and friends, who all helped make this event a great one.”
SERV members transport blood, blood products, samples and donated breast milk year round to hospitals across the two counties.
Since the voluntary organisation started providing its free-of-charge service to the NHS, in 2010, it has carried out more than 4,800 delivery runs, which it is estimated to have saved the health service more than £300,000, transporting more than 100,000 boxes and samples.
