Cambridgeshire food reviewer Lucy Melton shares her thoughts following a recent visit to a popular Chinese restaurant in St Ives
At the weekend I did something I haven’t done in years – went to a Chinese restaurant!
Don’t get me wrong, I’ll have a takeaway every now and then, but it’s been years since I actually went to a restaurant and I’d forgotten how good it can be.
We headed to The Welcome in St Ives, which has been around for years and has always had a good reputation.
We decided to go for the à la carte menu over the buffet and it actually worked out cheaper.
We had SO much food and even ended up taking some home.

I started with the chicken and sweetcorn soup, the thick broth and flavour were delicious, and it’s such a great way to start.
We also had the chicken satay skewers, which were great, with loads of meat and plenty of flavour.

We had so much food but my highlights were the chicken in yellow bean sauce, a dish I hadn’t had before and I’m so glad I tried it.
The Hong Kong style sweet & sour was really good too, it wasn’t too sickly, which I was thankful for, and it had crispy chicken, which is my favourite.
The duck had amazing flavour, as did the shredded chilli beef, which had the perfect crunch to it.

The king prawn noodles were a massive portion as was the house special fried rice with garlic and soy sauce; you got so much meat, and both were great!

The deep fried prawns were another highlight, big prawns inside, the batter was cooked really well and they came with a great sauce to dip them in.
Honestly, I’d forgotten how much I enjoy sitting down and having a proper Chinese meal.
So much food and loads of variety, I won't leave it as long next time!
