An extraordinary meeting of Huntingdonshire District Council has been called next week to debate a motion of no confidence in the council's executive leader, Cllr Sarah Conboy.
The meeting called for September 1 follows a request by Conservative group leader Cllr Ross Martin.
It comes after the authority's two Green Party councillors withdrew from the council’s coalition administration, leaving it without a majority.
Cllr Martin’s motion states that the council no longer has confidence in Lib-Dem leader Cllr Conboy as the council's leader and seeks her removal from office with immediate effect.
It reads: “This council resolves that it no longer has confidence in Councillor Conboy as Leader of the council and, in accordance with the constitution, removes Councillor Conboy from the office of Leader with immediate effect.”
If the motion is approved, councillors could then immediately elect a new leader for the rest of the four-year term, in line with the council’s constitution.
The extraordinary meeting follows a developing political crisis at the district council, prompted by disputed proposals to build homes on car parks in Huntingdon, St Ives and St Neots - although the St Neots plans have since been pulled.
Greens Cllr Stephen Ferguson and Cllr Lara Davenport-Ray announced in a statement last Monday (17) that they were leaving the coalition over the car park homes' plans, which meant the Liberal-Democrat administration no longer had a majority.
Cllr Martin subsequently wrote to Cllr Ferguson calling for an extraordinary council meeting so members could vote on the no-confidence motion, and the date has now been set for next Tuesday when the motion will be the only item on the agenda.
