Abbey College has made the planning application to Huntingdonshire District Council.
If approved, the existing single-storey changing rooms would be demolished to make way for the teaching block.
Six new science classrooms are planned, which would enable the school to increase its pupil intake from seven form entry to eight - as requested by Cambridge City Council.
The planned teaching block will be situated where the current changing rooms are located, allowing it to link with existing buildings such as the gym.
The school hopes to refurbish its Locality building, currently empty, to create a standalone Sixth Form block.
The intention is to improve the building’s appearance and performance, using cladding similar to that proposed for the new extension so the campus appears as a cohesive development.
The application also sets out plans to improve site access and parking.
The current soft play area at the front of the school will be split to allow for new parking spaces and an access road leading to One Leisure, helping to move traffic away from key student routes.
The proposal increases school parking spaces from 102 to 135 and provides additional spaces for One Leisure. There will also be expanded cycle storage.
The scheme has taken into account the sensitive location close to the historic Ramsey Abbey and its grounds.
Historic England said the the proposals would cause "little harm".
The design access statement submitted with the application states: "Due to the restrictions of the site and its proximity to the Historic monument Ramsey Abbey there are limited areas for development across the school site.
"This is why the existing single storey changing rooms has been chosen for the main area of new build.
"This area has previously been built on and is assumed will have limited archaeological importance.
"Through demolishing the single storey underutilised changing rooms this will allow a purpose-built structure to be formed to house the six new science classrooms required for the proposed 1FE expansion without losing existing accommodation.
"The school will also be reorganised to better use existing spaces and allow a new secure entry point to the school for pupils and visitors."
