Three staff members from Magpas Air Ambulance have been recognised at this year’s national Air Ambulance Awards of Excellence.
The annual awards celebrate outstanding achievements across the UK’s air ambulance sector, recognising individuals and teams who go above and beyond in delivering lifesaving care.
Among the winners were Nicola Cooper, community training and engagement lead at Magpas Air Ambulance, based in Alconbury Weald, Cambridgeshire, who received the Breaking Barriers Award for her work in expanding access to CPR and defibrillator training.
Since joining the charity in 2021, Ms Cooper has delivered training to more than 6,000 people in the past year alone, including refugees, women’s groups, and the Cambridge Mosque.
Chris Carey, a trustee of Magpas, was named Trustee of the Year after raising more than £20,000 for the charity and providing governance and oversight.
Dr Simon Lewis, the charity’s executive medical director, received the Lifetime Achievement Award for his national impact on pre-hospital emergency medicine (PHEM) over more than two decades.
Dr Lewis co-created the first structured PHEM training course, developed the 10 themes underpinning the national curriculum, and helped secure General Medical Council recognition for the specialty.
He also led the East of England Major Trauma Network, transforming trauma care across the region.
Magpas Air Ambulance provides critical care across Cambridgeshire and surrounding areas, operating 24 hours a day from its Alconbury Weald base.
