Chair of Huntingdonshire District Council Christmas Message

First off, I would like to thank The Hunts Post for inviting me to write a message. It was definitely something I wasn't expecting.

When I travel around on civic engagements, what comes across is the tremendous amount of good will out in the community.

People from all walks of life are freely giving their time and effort in making life better for others.

This evening, as I write, I was pleased to attend a carol service given by the Peterborough Salvation Army in aid of the Mayor of Peterborough's charities.

Their brass band provided some great music and the accompaniment to the carols, as well an accomplished performance by their choir.

As well as being a very enjoyable and meaningful evening, several hundred pounds was raised for charity.

Now, there is nothing unusual in raising funds for charity at Christmas, but it must be remembered that this work goes on throughout the year, not just at Christmas.

So, the point I am trying to make is this. The season of good will is not just meant for Christmas.

It needs to stretch six months in each direction. We all need to be kind and foster good will, not just in attitude of mind, but in deed as well.

That way, we can all together help to build a better world.
