Liberal Democrat councillor and Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council leader Paul Zukowskyj admitted he was a "little frustrated" with the party's local election 2024 results.

The Lib Dems made two gains and held another two seats on a day that was dominated by Labour, who overtook the yellow party for the most seats on the council.

Speaking to the Welwyn Hatfield Times, Cllr Zukowskyj said that despite "positives", he was a "little frustrated" with the results.

"It could have been better for us and we’re a little bit frustrated," he said.

"But we’ve made two gains and two people standing got re-elected, so there are positives."

Cllr Zukowskyj held his seat in Welham Green and Hatfield South with 699 votes, just edging out Conservative candidate Teresa Travell on 593.

"I was a bit concerned at one point when I was looking at the votes coming out on the table, but I got over the line so I’m very happy to keep my seat," he added.

With Labour overtaking the Liberal Democrats to hold the most seats of any party on Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council, Cllr Zukowskyj admitted changes could be made to the joint administration which currently leads the council, but they are not likely to be "significant".

"I think we’ve got a strategy as to how the council administration will change," he said.

"I don’t see it changing really significantly. We’ve worked really well with Labour and I’m hoping that will continue.

"I look forward to sitting down with them on Tuesday and thrashing that out."
