This week in our Spotlight on Volunteers feature, we take a look at the Hunts Local Group, who are part of the Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire.

Who are the Hunts Local Group?

The Wildlife Trust Hunts Local Group aims to support all wildlife in Huntingdonshire, and encourage the public to join the Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire.

We also help to raise funds to help nature, in the face of all the current challenges, which include climate change, population rise and development.

What do they do?

We hold monthly indoor meetings in Brampton from September to March, where a guest speaker will give an illustrated talk on wildlife, possibly a local nature reserve or an environmental project.

In the summer we organise guided walks to see our best countryside, especially nature reserves, and learn more about local wildlife.

We have an active committee who organise our events and publicity.

Attendance at our indoor meetings is around 50, and walks vary from 20 to 40.

Everyone is a volunteer and a supporter of wildlife. There is no need to be a member of the Wildlife Trust to come to our meetings.

Indoor meetings are £4 for adults (free for youngsters) and include tea/coffee and biscuits. Guided walks are free of charge.

We are a support group for the Wildlife Trust BCN, who do a myriad of things for wildlife in Hunts, such as owning and managing nature reserves, advising land owners how best to manage their land for wildlife, and publicising the many threats to our wildlife.

Our local group encourages people to learn more about the wildlife in our area, how to identify different fauna and flora and to get involved in supporting conservation efforts.

Anyone with an interest in wildlife and the environment is welcome to join us, meet like-minded people, and no skills are required.
