The future of a former leisure centre is back with planners as a revised application has been submitted to demolish the facility to build luxury holiday apartments.

Huntingdonshire District Council’s planning committee previously rejected proposals to knock down Buckden Marina and Leisure Club to make way for 20 apartments.

More than 90 residents also objected to the plans and now the leisure centre building is listed as an asset of community value with the council.

But Buckden Properties Ltd has now submitted a revised scheme of 15 one- and two-bedroom apartments with parking, moorings and cycle parking.

Among the issues listed are a major leak in the swimming pool, a broken jacuzzi, broken pipes and pumps and replacement gym and kitchen equipment needed.

It is argued an investment of £1m would be needed to reopen the facility.

The design and access statement says: “The current building which was used as a leisure facility some years ago is now becoming dilapidated and an eyesore in a predominant area on the site.

“The remedial work to make the building aesthetically pleasing and up to current commercial standards is becoming unviable.

“The proposed scheme to increase the number of lets within Buckden Marina, will help boost the area not just within the marina site itself but to help increase footfall within the surrounding towns and villages...”

Kelly Thompson set up the Riverside Health & Leisure Community Interest Company and helped push for the asset of community value status.

She said: “There are very strong views about this among the community in Buckden; people really want the leisure centre back open again.”

Huntingdonshire District Council planners received the most recent application on December 5, 2023.

The public consultation closes on January 13, 2024.
