178 new homes will be built in Huntingdon after a provider of affordable homes finalised the purchase of two parcels of land for a £48.6 regeneration project.

Countryside Partnerships, the UK’s largest provider of multi-tenure affordable homes, will build the new homes on disused land off George Street and Edison Bell Way.

The centrally located land, which has lain derelict for years, will be revitalised to make way for one-, two-, three- and four-bedroom homes to be owned and managed by MTVH, one the UK’s most trusted housing providers, following a forward-sale agreement.

The development of the site will trigger the wider regeneration of the area with large investment being made to improve the surrounding highways.

Planning permission for an urban design-led development has already been granted and work to deliver the scheme, ideally located for both the town centre and Huntingdon station, is expected to start early next year.

Land and development director at Countryside Partnerships South East Midlands, Greg Wood, said: “As the UK’s largest provider of multi-tenure, affordable homes, we need to be working with partners like MTVH in Huntingdon.

“There’s a crippling shortage of affordable homes across the UK and we’re scaling up our ambitions to tackle that shortage and to provide homes where they are needed most.”

Executive director and development at MTVH, Guy Burnett, said: “Tackling the housing crisis is one of the greatest challenges of our time and MTVH are committed to working with partners, such as Countryside, to help to achieve this.

“This exciting project underlines this commitment and represents a significant investment in affordable homes in Huntingdon, whilst regenerating unused land and boosting the local community and economy.”
