Hunts County Squash Club in Hemingford Grey played host to a weekend of intense squash action at The Sports Academy Open Professional Squash Tournament.
Spectators were treated to a display of skill, determination, and sportsmanship as players from around the world competed for valuable world ranking points.
In a surprising turn of events, local hero and top seed Sofia Aviero-Pita faced a setback in the women's event, bowing out in the semi-finals to an in-form Olivia Besant.
However, the women's final showcased an exhilarating battle between South African national champion Savannah Ingledew and English woman Olivia Besant.
Control of the match seesawed between the players with Ingledew’s experience the difference in a thrilling 3/2 final, securing the women’s championship.
The men's competition was no less intense, with Egyptian powerhouse Omar El Torkey emerging victorious in a hard-fought final against 2022’s champion, Welshman Rhys Evans.
In a high quality match El Torkey's skill and precision were on full display as he clinched the title with a 3/1 victory, cementing his status as the men's champion of The Sports Academy Open for 2023.
The tournament not only showcased the talents of international players but also provided an opportunity for local enthusiasts to enjoy some battles on the court.
Sunday's play combined a local graded competition alongside the professional finals.
Club members and players from across Cambridgeshire and beyond battled for supremacy over four different grades.
Hunts County Squash Club Members fared well in the events, with Kieran Weston emerging triumphant in the D grade, showcasing his skills and determination.
Sam Hewson claimed a well-deserved second place in the C Grade and Marcus Latimer engaged in an epic battle in the B grade, finishing as the runner-up after a thrilling 3/2 final.
The Sports Academy Open Professional Squash Tournament not only celebrated the triumphs of elite athletes on the global stage, but also highlighted the passion and dedication of local players.
It was a superb weekend of action for the local squash community. Combining participation and professional proved a very successful format and something the Sports Academy will use to promote and develop the sport in future events.
