The work to extend the Little Paxton Lawn Cemetery is now complete, with the 'beautiful' burial ground also recognised with an environmental award.

Little Paxton Lawn Cemetery is situated one mile outside the village between Little Paxton & Hail Weston, and the extension will provide sufficient burial space for the next 50 years.

Little Paxton Parish Council had purchased 2.2 acres of land, previously part of a field, for the extension and was delighted to announce its completion.

Little Paxton Parish Clerk Jenny Gellatly said: "The extension allows for double-depth graves, and residents of Little Paxton and non-residents of the village may purchase burial rights."

Cllr Jean Matheson added: "The project has taken seven years to reach fruition, and a beautiful, tranquil area of rest has been created which is attracting wildlife."

The burial ground has been divided into four sections, with "magnificent" flowers planted and starting to attract hundreds of pollinating insects.

Chair of the Council Cllr Kathy Bishop said: "The area we will be using first is the Kite burial section, named after the number of Kite (birds of prey) seen flying nearby.

"The other three sections are named after birds local to the cemetery- Woodpecker, Yellowhammer and Partridge."

Following the completion of the extension, the Parish Council was awarded the John Trew Environment Project Award from Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Association of Local Councils for the cemetery extension.

"We are thrilled to receive the Environment Award," said Cllr Matheson.

Further hedging, tree and bulb planting will be carried out in the Autumn.
