Upwood Cricket Club (CC) are celebrating a fantastic season as champions of the Whitings League Division 3 following a two-wicket victory over Histon 2nd XI.

The victory also means that Upwood has gained back-to-back promotions after only one season in the third division to cap a remarkable year.

Upwood came into the final league game on September 2 just seven points behind league leaders Cambridge NCI CC, knowing that a positive result was required to leapfrog them into first.

Histon were put into bat after losing the toss and were restricted to 171 runs from 45 overs after some impressive and tight Upwood bowling.

Upwood were in no mood to hang around and set about chasing down the total at an impressive run rate.

However, Upwood were in danger of losing the match when they began leaking wickets.

Harry Cotton and Upwood's youngest regular team member, 17-year-old Oli Parncutt, steadied the ship and put on 79 runs between them to put Upwood into a strong position.

Oli top scored for Upwood with 47 runs as he finished the season as the league's-leading run-scorer, and the reaming Upwood batsmen were able to push the side over the line.

Upwood reached the total after 35 overs and two wickets to spare to spark jubilation for the away side, cementing a famous season that will live long in the memory.
