Three masked men used an angle grinder to break into a supermarket in St Ives.

The burglary happened at the Co-op at Burleigh Hill Centre on Constable Road at about 1.20am this morning (Thursday September 7).

The three suspects, who wore balaclavas, travelled in a dark, high-powered Audi.

They then broke into the premises using an angle grinder on shutters and targeted cigarettes and tobacco products.

After the burglary, police have cordoned off the area and the store was closed to the public. It has since reopened.

A spokesperson for Cambridgeshire Constabulary said: "It is not known whether they stole anything, but assessments are being carried out.

"Detectives are also linking the raid to another similar burglary in Elizabeth Parade, Newmarket, Suffolk, at about 2.40am this morning."

Detectives said that they know there were people at the Burleigh Hill Centre at the time of the incident and are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

They are also urging anyone who saw the vehicle involved or who has dashcam footage, either from before or after the St Ives offence, when it was travelling towards Newmarket, to get in touch.

The spokesperson added that anyone who sees anything suspicious around commercial premises late at night should call the police.

"Even if it turns out to be nothing, we would prefer to know," said the spokesperson.

Anyone with information is advised to visit the force's website quoting 35/67074/23 or call 101.

Alternatively, the public can report anonymously via Crimestoppers.
