Cambridgeshire Library Service is encouraging children to take part in its Summer Reading Challenge and discover the joy of reading for pleasure over the summer holidays.

To support this year’s ‘sport and games’ theme, Alconbury Weald is hosting a variety of activities including table tennis, ten pin bowling and mini golf from 10am to midday on Saturday, July 15 in The Club and on Watch Office Green.

The event is aimed at youngsters aged from 4-11.

Hunts FA will also be teaching football skills on its inflatable pitch and Living Sport will have a series of mini sporting challenges.

As well as sports and games, children will be able to enjoy some quiet time in Alconbury Weald’s community library and the county's mobile library.

All children taking part will receive a collector's folder when they start the challenge, and a sticker for each book they read.

Those collecting all six stickers will receive a certificate and medal.

Jessica Jones, from Cambridgeshire Library Services said: “The Summer Reading Challenge is a great way to get children excited about books and the team has been delivering assemblies to local schools to encourage them to take up the challenge.

"We hope to see lots of them at Alconbury Weald for the launch event and at local libraries throughout the summer holidays.”

Natalie Leigh-Brown, communities and partnerships for Alconbury Weald, said: “We’re delighted to be able to host this event for this year’s Summer Reading Challenge.

"There aren’t many libraries that overlook a large green capable of hosting such a diverse range of sporting activities and games."

If you are unable to attend the launch event at Alconbury Weald, you can still sign up for the Summer Reading Challenge at your local library.
