A former Premier League footballer who has spoken openly about physical and sexual abuse is coming to St Ives to talk about his career and lead a safeguarding awareness workshop.

Paul Stewart, who has played for clubs including Manchester City, Liverpool and Tottenham and capped for England three times, waived his anonymity in 2016.

He then spoke about the physical and sexual abuse he endured at the hands of a youth coach as a 10-year-old growing up in Manchester.

His story also featured on BBC One’s 2021 documentary Football’s Darkest Secret and he has joined the EFL’s Life skills team to raise awareness about the importance of safeguarding.

He has worked with the FA and Premier League clubs delivering workshops.

At the free event, which is taking place at Burgess Hall, he will talk about his lived experiences, his football career and lead a safeguarding awareness workshop. There will also be an opportunity for a Q&A.

The event takes place on Thursday May 25 from 7pm.
