Hundreds of community members, hosts and refugees stood united for peace and were treated to live music as Huntingdon's outgoing mayor, Cllr David Landon Cole and the town council hosted a Ukrainian benefit evening.

The event was held on April 29 to mark Vesnianky, which means spring.

There were performances from the Prolisok dancers, who have appeared on the BBC's The One Show, as well as Zhnyva dance band, Buckden Ukrainian Choir, singers Tetyana Makovei and Glastonbury favourite Inessa Semianiv.

Buckden Ukrainian choir, which includes many refugees, also sang a medley of traditional songs at the event, which was held at Huntingdon Town Hall.

There was further fun as audience members tried out various Ukrainian dance steps.

Together with Huntingdon Town Council, The Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain (AUGB) Waltham Cross branch organised the benefit to celebrate Ukraine’s vibrant culture.

Auction prizes werea also donated by local businesses to raise money at the event.

Roman Pasika, chairman of AUGB Waltham Cross, said: “We are grateful to every volunteer, business and artist who donated their goods or services, and to David Cole, Cambridgeshire communities and all the hosts for their continued support."

More than 160 people attended the event, which was supported by 30 volunteers.

Mr Pasika added: "Everyone enjoyed the warm atmosphere, which brought respite for many present, from ongoing concerns for loved ones under continuing Russian bombardment."

Viktoria, a refugee from Irpin who attended the evening, live streamed performances to Ukraine to show the continued support from UK communities.

Outgoing Huntingdon Mayor David Cole wowed the audience by saying in Ukrainian “we welcome you to Huntingdon, you are our friends, you are our brothers and sisters”.

Other dignitaries included MP for Huntingdon Jonathan Djanogly, and Richard and Nan Taplin, Mayor and Mayoress of Godmanchester.
