Huge potholes in St Neots High Street

I write about the huge potholes in St Neots town centre.

I would say that the situation has worsened over the last week.

These potholes are joining up! Some are a few feet deep, one in the main High Street near the traffic lights junction with New Street is huge.

Some have yellow lines around them, I don't know what this signifies. Maybe it's just that they are aware?

I'm not alone in feeling these potholes are dangerous and so difficult to navigate by car and cycle. Something has to be done soon

Save Money and Save the Planet

It was good to see (Hunts Post April 5) the Mayor of Huntingdon talking about the environmental aims and actions of Huntingdon Town Council, and also about what individuals and local groups are doing in the town.

Huntingdon residents can now get regular updates on a range of environmental matters by joining the Eco Huntingdon Facebook group.

However, it is not just Huntingdon where such positive things are happening – the same can be seen in other Huntingdonshire towns and villages with local councils, groups and individuals taking action to save energy, reduce waste, promote more recycling, encourage active travel and improve biodiversity.

As the Huntingdon Mayor says we can all make changes, big and small, that save carbon, save money, and improve the environment here in Huntingdonshire

Mobility Scooters should not be Banned

I write in reply to some social media posts regarding mobility scooters after an incident in Huntingdon High Street.

To answer my own question, obviously mobility scooters should not be banned. I only ask the question because some people also use bikes and trikes as a mobility aid.

Unfortunately, they are banned from cycling along the High Street from 10am till 4pm most days.

Council Tax bill was shocking for us

We recently received our council tax bill and see it has gone up an extra £30 per month.

A shocking rise. It has made me think about what this council offers and wonder where all our money goes.

Is it not too much to ask to have a traffic warden? We have a serious problem with illegal parking in the town centre, in fact, all over the town.

Just a week ago a van nearly hit me as I was driving down ‘take away’ street as it pulled further into the road to avoid a car parked on double yellow lines. Another close call.

I then glanced down a narrow street nearby to see three cars parked on double yellow lines and wondered how an ambulance would navigate that barrier. Impossible.

Is it too much to ask for a traffic warden? Or are we trying to recreate the Wild West?

Regarding road surfaces, yes, it is the worst time of the year for this but can we please have the road surfaces fixed properly? Or at all?

So many potholes litter the streets. There was a long tail back on Huntingdon Road recently where a man's tyre burst when he went over a pothole.

That has some tarmac dumped in it now but it’s hardly well done. Maybe there is a theme here?

It is clear a whole load of tarmac has been dumped on the pavements as a quick fix, it would have been nice to have paving slabs that look nice but what about the parks?

The pathways around our beautiful parks are overgrown, have become hazardous and are hard to navigate. There had been some attempt at the riverside but that stopped short. Why wasn’t that carried on?

I was shocked recently to see a vaping shop take prime spot in the town centre.

Is there nothing the council can do about this. With the rising problem of under 16s vaping surely this was highly irresponsible letting a shop that sells these products move into that location.

And what about all the closing shops and banks? What is happening to the High Street? Why can’t the council do a better job at attracting better shops? The one clothes shop is also going…shocking state of affairs.

And yes, we hear about all the money that has been captured for town improvements but this hasn’t manifested, instead, we have a hike on our council tax bills!

With all the people moving into this, under equipped, area you’d think they’d start with the developments and bring back some life to St Neots.

Well, there is one positive. We have new, well lit, bike sheds in the parks now, where teenagers can hang out and vape and people can try and park their bikes, once they have navigated the pothole roads where corners are dangerous because of illegally parked cars. Great.

Management of the town has been a joke for a couple of years now. Something has to be done.

Policing takes time to achieve results

I refer to the latest complaint by Mr Baaraclough who describes the police as non-existent.

I do have a little knowledge of the work the police do. If you sign up and check out the Cambridgeshire force under E-Cops you can find details of arrests and subsequent sentencing.

In addition, as a long-standing member of the St Ives & District Road Safety Committee I can advise that the local police sergeant attended our last meeting and listened patiently reports about the various problem areas.

He explained how his small team are currently targeting one area of continuous concern, namely bad parking outside or near schools.

Unfortunately, resources are stretched dealing with the never-ending problem of drug dealing.

They cut one gang down and another quickly take their place and catching the leaders is time consuming.
