Ferrars Hall Care Home resident Winifred Scott has celebrated turning 103 years old, surrounded by friends and family at her own special afternoon tea party.

Winifred turned 103 on March 9 and was surprised by the care home's staff team with flowers, a basket of her favourite things and a "tremendous" cake made by chef Caroline Tykot to celebrate the momentous occasion.

When asked how Win had reached the "wonderful" age of 103, her son Peter Scott joked: "The secret to longevity, we think, is a combination of a daily whisky when she was at home and good genes!"

Known fondly as 'Win', Ferrars Hall Care Home manager, Susan Dunnell, said: "Win's life has so far seen five monarchs starting with George V, which is incredible as you wouldn't know a person's life just by looking at them."

Win was born in 1920 in County Longford, Ireland, the second youngest of five siblings.

Peter said: "In my mother's own words, she had an idyllic childhood."

When she was just 17 years old, Win's mother died aged 59, so she and her younger sister came to England to stay with their two older sisters.

Once they were all settled in England, Win decided she wanted to be a nurse and started a career in nursing before the Second World War.

Early during the Second World War, Win met her husband-to-be, Harold, who was helping at the hospital during his off-duty time from the Army as a stretcher bearer.

In October 1942, the pair got married, and Peter was born in June 1947.

Together, Win and Harold enjoyed ballroom dancing and singing in a local group that used to perform in care homes in the area.

Susan added: "We would like to wish her a very happy birthday from all the team here at Ferrars Hall."
