The governing body at Abbey College has said goodbye to two of its long-standing governors who have dedicated an incredible 78 years between them to the voluntary role.

Both John Chrisp and Esmond Edwards brought a wealth of knowledge and ideas to the school’s board, and their roles in legal and accounting matters enriched the college with support through many of its milestones.

John began his governor journey at the Ailwyn School before earning his title of chair of governors.

He joined Esmond at Ramsey Abbey School where they continued to serve until Ramsey Abbey and the Ailwyn schools merged in 2006 to form what is now Abbey College.

Esmond grew up living in the Abbey when his dad was headmaster. As an accountant, he spent many years acting as chair of the operations committee whilst supporting the overseeing of school finances.

The pair’s expertise and professional background contributed to many developments at the school including the new multi-use games area, Milennium building, Frank Burton Block and the Science Block.

Reflecting on his time on the board, John said: “The role has been an extremely rewarding one and I am proud of what my contributions as a governor has helped Abbey College to achieve.

“It has taken a lot of time and commitment, but it has been a privilege to contribute to the school community.”

Headteacher at Abbey College, Andy Christoforou, who worked alongside John and Esmond, said: “They have been an asset to the governing body and made a tangible difference to the development, learning and community within the school.

“They are leaving a legacy behind and will be missed.”

The governing body is now on the lookout for new passionate members of the local area to fill their positions.
