The Lord Protector pub in Huntingdon has reopened following a refit with a new-look team pledging to deliver top-class hospitality and great value to customers.

The pub reopened on February 13, revamped following £296,000 worth of investment, nine new big-screen TVs added to show live sport, two new pool tables and an illuminated dartboard with laser oche.

Steve Cook, partner Michelle Johnson and his daughter Sian Howard will ensure the venue named after Huntingdon's most famous son – Oliver Cromwell – will be a family-run business for all of the community.

Prior to taking over The Lord Protector, Steve and Michelle were in charge of The Grafton in Bedford but said they were unable to resist the charms of the Lord Protector.

Steve said: "We were very happy at The Bedford, which like the Lord Protector, is a Craft Union site.

"When someone suggested we take a look at it, I just had to take the opportunity.

"The potential here is huge, and we are going to deliver a fantastic pub for the community to enjoy."

The pub had closed its doors in February 2022 for major works, which included a refit and redesign throughout.

The Craft Union Pub Company took on the pub and invested more than £296,000 to help it continue to offer its services and hospitality.

"When I saw what they had done with the refurbishment, I was stunned," added Steve.

"It looks spectacular, and to say we are excited to welcome people here is an understatement."

Steve plans to focus on the pub's cask ale range and hopes to add to the two hand pulls currently in the Lord Protector.

Entertainment and music events will be planned for the future at the pub, which could even end up hosting a very special occasion; the marriage of Steve and Michelle.

The Lord Protector will also be family-friendly and welcomes all pet dogs.
