Volunteers took to the streets of Huntingdon on Sunday to give the town a bit of a clean up.

The event, set up by a group called Huntingdon Green Town, saw 20 adults and six children combine forces to collect rubbish from open spaces in the Sapley area.

Huntingdon Green Town is a new group of like-minded individuals who have come together to eradicate litter in the town.

The aim is to host monthly litter picking events and hope local people will join them.

They were joined by Huntingdon mayor, Cllr David Landon Cole, on Sunday, who was enthusiastic in the build-up to the first litter pick and demonstrated his support on the day by getting involved.

Tom Gosling, leader of the new group, said: "I was humbled by the support from local residents.

"Being a new group with little presence within Huntingdon, it is difficult to gain interest, however, Huntingdon has certainly exceeded expectation.

"It was a pleasure to be joined by so many like-minded individuals who all picked with passion to ensure a cleaner, greener environment for us all to live.

"It was staggering to have so much litter collected although with continued picks combined with exposure to the damaging effects of litter, I hope in time this will reduce in volume.

"Regarding littering, a change in ethos is required and hopefully Huntingdon Green Town will be a contributing factor to the change that is required.

"Credit to Rachel, my co-leader, for the energy and enthusiasm she has demonstrated in both the set up of the group and execution of our first pick."
