Schools across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough are bracing themselves for a day of industrial action and closures, with thousands of teachers across England and Wales set to strike.

The National Education Union (NEU) voted to take industrial action across February and March, with the first day of four teacher's strikes in the eastern region taking place tomorrow (Wednesday, February 1).

Schools across Cambridgeshire have made arrangements for tomorrow's strikes, with some closing for the day, some open and others partially open.

Jonathan Lewis, director of education for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, said: "The emerging picture is one of significant disruption.

"Even schools which are fully open will see some disruption to the curriculum.

"We will be collating information on which schools are closed or partially closed and updating our website regularly."

The Department for Education (DfE) has said it expects headteachers to take all reasonable steps to keep schools open for as many pupils as possible, and CCC will be supporting schools in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough to achieve this.

A spokesperson for CCC added: "However, the decision to open, restrict attendance, or close a maintained school is for the headteacher, while for academies, the decision rests with the relevant academy trust."

An Astrea spokesperson said: "Like all other schools across the country, the NEU strike will impact the ability of our schools to remain fully open on Wednesday.

"Our four secondary schools in Cambridgeshire will open for students in Years 11, 12 and 13, as well as vulnerable students.

"Students in all other year groups will be taught online, in line with the Department for Education's guidance."

Pupils and parents from St Ivo Academy in St Ives have been sent a letter with details of arrangements, stipulating Years 7 to 10 pupils will not need to come to school.

The letter said that St Ivo has more than 50 staff in the NEU and expects the action "to have a considerable impact."
