Two members of Grafham Water Sailing Club were crowned national champions at the Ronstan A-Class Catamaran National Championship.

Seven A-Class sailors in one foiler and six classics entered the nationals hosted by Grafham Water part of the recent Gill Cat Open.

Fleets took part in six races over both a Saturday and Sunday.

Grafham’s Hugh Macgregor, fresh from competing in the European Championships in Lake Garda, was the in-form sailor to beat in the classic category, winning all of his six races.

But the competition was for second and third places, which after Gordon Upton of Rutland had capsized, was out of race one.

Neil Klabe of Grafham came runner-up, while Dan Brzezinski of Clacton finished third.

Grafham’s Julian Bosch was the only foiling A-class entrant as he showed good speed and boat handling skills on the course.

Macgregor continued his dominance in race two, with Brzezinski second followed by his teammate Peter Boxer.

In race three, Macgregor gained an extra 10 per cent speed upwind but downwind, he sailed at a higher angle to win before sailing to victory in race four.

The rest of the field battled it out for the remaining spots as Brzezinski was second, Klabe in third and Boxer came fourth.

Rain played a key role in racing on the Sunday, with Tony Welch from Grafham taking part.

Macgregor was chased by Boxer and Klabe but held onto top spot and Brzezinski made up the top four.

As first place overall and in this race was guaranteed for Macgregor, it was down to Boxer, Klabe and Brzezinski for second.

Klabe fought back after he was over the line as the gun went off for the stat of the last race, allowing the rest of the fleet to sail up.

Klabe fought back and had passed both Boxer and Brzezinski into second place.

On the last downwind leg, Boxer edged in front as Klabe and Brzezinski were in close distance of each other, but it was the Clacton sailor who finished in third.
