A Cambridgeshire Paralympian will be shipping off to the World Boccia Championships this winter.

Will Hipwell from Papworth Everard has been chosen to compete in the championships in Rio de Janeiro between December 3-14.

Hipwell is on course for Rio having previously competed in the 2018 World Boccia Championships in Liverpool and the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics.

The 35-year-old also earned a gold medal from the Povoa World Cup in the team event with David Smith OBE and Claire Taggart earlier this year.

Hipwell said: “It’s one of the biggest competitions in the boccia calendar and I feel privileged to have the chance to play against some of the world’s best boccia players.”

Greg Baker, Boccia UK performance director, said: “The World Championships give us a great opportunity to see where we are with the rest of the world.

"The athletes have shown their competitiveness across the world stage this year and are excited to take this momentum into Rio."
