Communities across Huntingdonshire are rallying to support each other as winter sets in, and the cost of living continues to rise.

Council buildings, community centres and churches are among the ‘Warm Hubs’ or ‘Warm Spaces’ set up for members of the public to spend time without switching on the heating at home.

Some locations are also reminding their communities about the social activities already available, from toddler groups to craft meet ups.

Berkley Street Methodist Church, in St Neots, even serves a free hot meal every Thursday evening from 6pm.

The Hunts Post:

Reverend Sue Baker-Maher, of the St Neots and Huntingdon Methodist Circuit, said: “Everybody is struggling at the moment, and our buildings are open to everyone.

“Please, come along, and together we all can help make things a little bit better for everybody.”

In September, Huntingdonshire District Council started gathering information for a directory of ‘Warm Spaces’.

The Hunts Post:

Community organisations were asked to let the council know if they hosted an activity or get-together which locals could go to and keep warm.

Councillor Ben Pitt, the council’s Executive Councillor for Health and Community, said: “We hope these ‘Warm Spaces’ can be welcoming environments where people of all ages can go to take part in something fun while meeting new people in their community.

“Local organisations that are able to help will also be eligible for our Warm Spaces Community Chest Grant scheme to help them make a positive difference to our local communities."

The Hunts Post:

The Hunts Post is also gathering a list of where readers can go if they want somewhere to keep warm and cosy on any day of the week this winter.

If you are involved in a community project which has set up a ‘Warm Hub’, please let us know and we will publish the details.
