TWO children who are still suffering from the effects of one of the worst environmental disasters of all time will be visiting Ramsey tomorrow (March 12) to talk about their experiences.

Ten year olds Katya and Nastya are in England for a month’s trip away from their homes in Belarus where food, water and air is still contaminated from the radioactive fallout following the Chernobyl nuclear accident in 1986.

They will be at the Rainbow Resource Centre in Stocking Fen Road with Chernobyl Children’s Life Line representative Gerrie Bayley to give a presentation on the charity.

Kayta and Nastya are staying with a family in Llandudno, North Wales. The trip could extend their lives by four years.

Mrs Bayley said: “Even though children, like Nastya and Katya were born long after the accident, they are still suffering from its results. Many of their immune systems have been damaged, leading to cancers and they are extremely susceptible to colds, flu and other illnesses.”

The charity supports children suffering from low-level radiation by arranging recuperative trips to the UK with host families, providing on-going supplies of multi-vitamins, healthcare products and medicine, including chemotherapy medicine for children too sick to travel.

Last year a similar talk in Ramsey raised 843, and several sacks of clothes and toys were donated to the charity.

INFORMATION: The talk begins at 3pm. There is no charge and free refreshments will be provided at the event which is sponsored by Ramsey Bible Fellowship. Any children’s clothes or toys available for donation will be appreciated.
