A MAN has admitted burglary from a chemist in Godmanchester which resulted in a two-hour stand-off with police on Saturday night.

Daniel Crow, 27, of the Coach and Horses, Ermine Street, Huntingdon pleaded guilty to burgling JG Cliffords Chemist at The Causeway and stealing a quantity of drugs with an unknown value when he appeared at Huntingdon Magistrates Court this morning.

Police officers were called to the scene after Crow used a large felling axe to gain entry into the store at 8.45pm, causing 5,000 worth of damage, according to prosecutors.

Crow also told officers he had a gun, and is alleged to have threatened to kill officers and himself.

Paul Brown, prosecuting said: “This is a matter which would be appropriate to commit to crown court. The offence happened at JG Cliffords Chemist at 8.45pm on Saturday.

“Police were informed by the ADT alarms at the store which activated and by members of the public.

“The defendant went to the chemist with a large felling axe. He used the axe to gain entry and used it to break down an internal door. Substantial damage has occurred in this matter.

“When police arrived he told officers he had a gun, because of that various police actions had to be taken. Officers also found a large number of prescription drugs were removed and taken out of their packaging.”

Crow was remanded in custody. His case has been adjourned and will be heard at Peterborough Crown Court at a date to be set.

A Cambridgeshire Police spokesman said: “The incident caused disruption to the area on a busy Saturday night. The male remains in custody and investigations are continuing.”
