A MILITARY veteran and a Huntingdonshire businessman who are driving 2,000 miles through Europe to raise money for Help For Heroes have appealed to residents to rally round their cause.

Martin Brett and Neil Galloway, who are both 45 and live Seathwaite, Stukeley Meadows, are taking part in the charity’s European Rally 2013.

Starting on June 15 the pair, who call themselves the Stukeley Defenders, will take the route of the Allied invasion through Europe in World War Two in a bid to raise 3,000.

Mr Brett, who himself served in the Royal Electrical Mechanical Engineers in the 1980s before working closely with frontline troops as a researcher for the Ministry of Defence, said it was important to support those who put their lives on the line for their country.

“Today it takes a lot of courage for people to sign up because they know there is a strong likelihood they will be going to Afghanistan,” he said.

“We have a lifelong commitment to our soldiers. Even if they do not suffer any physical damage, the psychological effects of combat can be huge. It is our responsibility to help these people.”

The Stukeley Defenders have planned several fundraising events in the run-up to the rally, including sponsored shopping bag packing, kids’ treasure hunts and collections around Huntingdon.

Mr Brett and Mr Galloway are also appealing for sponsors and donations for prizes in raffles, quiz nights and competitions.

“We would appreciate any help in getting the word out to help us support this worthy cause,” Mr Brett added. “This worthy charity provides direct, practical support to wounded, injured and sick service personnel, veterans, and their families.”
